Information about BRISTOL Bristol has been a port for a thousand years, and during colonial times was of extreme importance and wealth. having renewed its links with the sea, the city has been revitalised. The old harbour side of warehouses is now home to bars, bistros and museums. Bristol attractions include John Wesley’s chapel, the oldest Methodist building in the world, the world famous Bristol Blue glass factory and museum, and the ss Great Britain. Designed by Isambard Brunel, it is the world's first iron hulled, screw propeller-driven, steam-powered passenger liner, and the only surviving 19th century example of the type. Brunel was also the designer of The Clifton Suspension Bridge which spans the beautiful Avon Gorge, and is synonymous with Bristol. Although a historic city, it manages to give London a run for its money in contemporary culture. A whole new genre of popular music sprang up from its streets with groups like Massive Attack and Portishead, and this influence is the result of a thriving music and arts scene. Bristol also has strong links with the aircraft industry, Fleet Air Arm Museum houses the largest European collection of Naval aircraft alongside Europe’s largest naval Air Station. The city is set among some of England’s most stunning coastline and countryside. The Cheddar Gorge is a dramatic chasm in the rocky Mendips, and walking over its footbridges is not for the fainthearted!
